While the Atlantic Hurricane Season officially runs from June 1st until November 30th, most of the intense storms have hit during a 17 day period spanning from Aug 17th until Sept 2nd. This is when you see storms with lower atmospheric pressure and favorable conditions helping to create more intense and destructive hurricanes. According to The Weather Channel, the following (with #1 being the worst) are the Top 5 most intense U.S. Hurricanes based on atmospheric pressure at landfall.
#5– 1886 Indianola, Texas Hurricane – hit August 20th
#4 – 1992 Hurricane Andrew (Southeastern Florida) – hit August 24th
#3 – 2005 Hurricane Katrina (New Orleans, Louisiana) – hit August 29th
#2 – 1969 Hurricane Camille (Mississippi Gulf Coast) – hit August 17th
#1 – 1935 Labor Day Hurricane (Florida Keys) – hit September 2nd
