Down to earth

then and now - oldtime farmer womanGardening and working in the yard is a great way to get some fresh air and exercise. With cooler temperatures right around the corner, it is the perfect time of year to reconnect with Mother Earth. According to “The Able Gardener” by Kathleen Yeomans, there are some easy things you can do to make your gardening experience an enjoyable one. The most important rule is to pace yourself. Small jobs seem to grow into larger ones, and when you try to do too much and hurry, accidents occur.

Take frequent breaks, allowing time between light and heavy tasks. If you have trouble with balance and bending, you may want to plan doing your work while sitting down. Change body positions often and stretch your muscles to keep limber. Dress in comfortable clothing, wear sunscreen and drink plenty of fluids. Taking care of yourself while caring for your garden is a winning combination.
