In 1910, Mrs. John Bruce Dodd of Spokane Washington was responsible for the first Father’s Day proclamation that honored all fathers (living or deceased). She decided to use the rose as a symbol for this day (red for those dads still living and a white rose for fathers who had died). It wasn’t until 1972 that Father’s Day became a national holiday in this country. It is celebrated on the third Sunday in June.
