Earth Day was founded by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970. Nelson was a pioneer in promoting ecological issues affecting our planet. His idea was to bring these concerns to Washington in order to use public pressure to develop a national environmental plan. Nelson succeeded by creating Earth Day to be celebrated each year on April 22nd.
Towns and cities all across America celebrate Earth Day with community celebrations mostly focusing on environmental education and volunteer opportunities. Kids and adults can work together to learn about the many ways to improve their surroundings and live a more healthy lifestyle. If you are looking for suggestions on things to do this Earth Day, read the list of ideas below. Also, be sure to check out the official Earth Day 2016’s website @ www.earthday.org
- Pick up trash around the neighborhood
- Plant a tree (native to your area – one that will thrive where planted)
- Volunteer at a local animal shelter (maybe even adopt a pet if possible)
- Enjoy a day of nature – (take a break from electronics and get outside and have some fun)
- Learn about composting and sustainable gardening (on your own property or part of a community garden)
- Take part in recycling programs (purchase brands that offer less wasteful packaging).
- Make sure you take reusable bags when doing any type of shopping
- Set up a bird feeder or squirrel feeder in your yard to attract neighborhood creatures
- Walk or ride your bike when traveling nearby
- Clean up local bodies of water
- Switch out highly chemical cleaning products in your home with natural and earth-friendly choices
- Pack drinks, snacks and lunches in washable reusable containers to cut down on garbage
- Find out what species are native to where you live and see if any are under the threat of extinction
- Support companies that offer organic and environmentally-friendly products
- Take a walk through your home and collect things you no longer need or use and donate them to charity
- Cook a delicious Earth Day meal – buy local organic produce
- Go over plans to save energy by turning off lights, using fans instead of air conditioning and unplugging devices not in use
